Tipoteh Wants NEC Commissioners Dismissed

first_imgLong time opposition politician, Dr. Togba-Nah Tipoteh, has called on President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf to dismiss, with immediate effect, all of the Commissioners of the National Elections Commission (NEC).Dr. Tipoteh, in a release said the Commissioners must be dismissed now, “because they operate unfairly.”He said there is great urgency for the NEC Commissioners’ dismissal, “because unfair elections often lead to violence.”Citing, reasons for the dismissal of the commissioners, Dr. Tipoteh said the NEC chair recently publicly gave undue promotion to a political party at the expense of other political parties; the presence of a foreigner as NEC Commissioner; foreigners as candidates in NEC elections; foreigners as voters in NEC elections: and the placement of the wrong surnames of candidates in NEC elections.Dr. Tipoteh insists that with the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) Peacekeepers all set to depart from Liberia by June 2016 and general and presidential elections scheduled to be held in 2017, NEC must be made a fair Commission before the 2017 elections.“After the Liberian civil crisis, the people of Liberia are united in one loud and clear voice: we want peace, no more war,” Dr. Tipoteh told President Sirleaf the release, concerning the NEC Commissioners. He is therefore urging civil society to present a short list of potential NEC Commissioners to the President so that she can appoint NEC Commissioners only from the civil society lst.“The President,” he said, “must not appoint NEC Commissioners from her own list, because that would result in having the NEC Commissioners becoming unfair, as they are now, doing what they think is pleasing to the President.”Dr. Tipoteh made the call over the weekend when some media personnel approached him on his reaction to the public praising of a political party by the NEC Chairperson, Cllr. Jerome Korkoya, while other NEC Commissioners remained silent and therefore supportive of the NEC Chairperson’s “illegal praise-singing.”Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
