Level pegging in Manning Group J

first_imgThe battle for the Group J semi-final spot in the ISSA-FLOW Manning Cup second round is going down to the wire following results of matches played yesterday at the Constant Spring Complex in St Andrew. In the first game of the double-header, St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) and Bridgeport High battled to a 1-1 draw. Napoleon Rochester sent STATHS ahead in the fifth minute but Kyle Ming equalised for Bridgeport in the 88th minute. In the second game, Kingston College (KC) and Charlie Smith finished 1-1. KC went ahead courtesy of a strike by captain Javain Brown in the 42nd minute. That was cancelled by a header from Charlie Smith’s towering defender Romario Williams in the 49th minute. With both results, all four teams in the group are locked on two points apiece as well as having a similar goal difference. In the group’s first set of games last week Wednesday, KC were held 1-1 by STATHS, and it was the same scoreline in the Bridgeport and Charlie Smith game. CHANCE TO FINISH Now, all four teams have a chance to finish on top in the group’s last set of games to be played next week at the same time at different venues. Coach of Charlie Smith, Jerome Waite, said it was a good game from both teams. He also credited his goalkeeper Shamarley Clayton for keeping them in the game. “It was a good game from the teams. The ‘keeper (Shamarley Clayton) was outstanding. We will take it one step at a time as we look forward to the next game,” Waite told The Gleaner. KC’s coach Ludlow Bernard said that his team created enough chances to win the game. “We got the chances to win the game. Now, it is not totally in our own hands but we have all to play for a win in the next game,” Bernard said. Meanwhile, the first game was also an exciting affair with STATHS taking an early lead and Bridgeport fighting back and earning the equaliser with just two minutes to go in normal time. WhatsApp takes SA mobile phones by storm

first_img21 February 2014More than half of South Africa’s urban adult mobile phone users are using instant messaging service WhatsApp, according to researchers World Wide Worx and Fuseware.Releasing an update of their South African Social Media Landscape 2014 report on Thursday, the researchers said a recent survey of adult cellphone users living in South Africa’s cities and towns indicated that at least 10.6-million urban adults were using WhatsApp.The release of the findings follow Wednesday’s announcement that the world’s biggest social media network, Facebook, is to acquire WhatsApp for US$19-billion as its seeks to consolidate its domination of both social media and instant messaging.Facebook still dominantAccording to the World Wide Worx/Fuseware survey, Facebook remains the dominant social network on local phones, with 45% – or 9-million South Africans – using it on their mobile devices at the end of 2013.“Total Facebook use in South Africa was at about 11-million at the end of 2013, putting it marginally ahead of WhatsApp – for now,” the researchers said.“Future expectations expressed by respondents indicate that WhatsApp will rise to 63% penetration in the next 12-18 months, while Facebook’s mobile penetration will rise more moderately, to 53%.”Mxit, BBM, Twitter, Google+The previous darling of the South African instant messaging market, Mxit, remains stable, and is used by 25% of adults, with the figure expected to rise to 29% in the next 12-18 months.BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) also continues to grow, the survey found, and is now used by 21% of adults, “with the figure potentially reaching 28% if BlackBerry is able to maintain its handset sales momentum in South Africa”.Twitter has reached 20% of the adult market, with expectations of it rising to 30% in the next 12 to 18 months.“The dark horse is Google+, which was shown last year to have low usage in terms of users posting content – fewer than half-a-million users had done so – but has an exceptionally high user base: 32% of adults say they use it on their phones. However, many respondents confuse the Google search app with the Google+ social networking app.”Two up-and-coming social apps also appear in the survey: Cape Town-based 2Go now has 8% penetration, expected to rise to 14%, while Chinese service WeChat, launched in South Africa in mid-2013, has reached 5% of the market, and is expected to rise to 13%.Strong urban-rural divideAccording to the researchers, the social and instant messaging market is characterised by a strong urban-rural divide, with WhatsApp used by 61% of urban dwellers, compared to 37% outside urban areas. The survey did not include “deep rural” users living outside cities and towns.Age is also a major differentiator, especially among Facebook and Mxit users. Facebook has 58% penetration among under-25s, 45% among those aged 26-45, and 25% among the over-45s. Mxit penetration drops dramatically through the age groups, from 43% to 21% to only 8%.“WhatsApp is more spread out, with 58% and 56% penetration, respectively, among the under-25s and 26-45s,” the researchers said. “It drops to 38% among over-45s. For both Facebook and WhatsApp, penetration among over-45s is now higher than overall penetration had been a year previously.”SAinfo reporterlast_img read more

Are You Getting Better At Selling?

first_imgK. Anders Ericsson, the expert who uncovered the 10,000-hour rule that you know from Malcolm Gladwell’s work once said, “I’ve been walking for 48 years, but I don’t believe I’m getting any better at it.” If I’m not mistaken, I saw that quote in Fast Company magazine many years ago. I saved the quote because it’s so powerful–and it’s funny.Certainly, there is something to the idea that the longer you do something the greater the odds that you will develop a higher level of competency. But Ericsson’s great insight is that it’s not the time you spend in a human endeavor that makes one an expert. Instead, it’s something he calls “deliberate practice.”Deliberate practice is different than just doing your job. It’s doing something with the intention of improving what you are doing. Ericsson suggests that the violinists he studied would take a nap after spending an hour in deliberate practice. Their focus and concentration were so intense, that afterward they were drained and had to rest and recover from the effort.I don’t know about you, but I don’t know too many people who are getting better at the endeavor of selling well because they are giving so much focus and concentration that they’re actually improving day-to-day. For most of us, we’ve done something long enough that we’re not even really conscious of what we’re doing. It’s like driving your car. If you’ve ever left your house and ended up at the office on a Saturday, that isn’t too different from what we do most of the time at work. Because we’ve made thousands of sales calls before, we make a sales call, without giving it much thought. The problem here is that selling has changed. Not in the way many of the pseudo-experts talk about sales changing. They tend to believe that all prospecting is now inbound and that the digital tools are the greatest evidence of change. This is not true, in fact, what’s changed is something more significant than the digital toolkit available to salespeople now. Success in sales requires that one be truly consultative, that one is perceived as a peer, and that one possesses the insights that allow you to advise your clients on decisions around their business.Because client expectations have changed, and because consensus is now necessary to win in B2B sales, and because most companies are not different enough to be able to compel change with their product or service alone, salespeople have to get a lot better and a lot faster. To this end, I’ve developed a program I call Sales Accelerator. It’s been built to provide salespeople with the mindset, skill sets, and the tools that allow them to develop into the salesperson their prospective clients need now, and to become someone those dream clients will want to buy from.If you’re an individual looking for self-development in both your personal and professional life, right now there is a lifetime offer available, and you can check it out here. If your business, looking for training for your teams, please go to the contact page here and I’ll reach out to you to schedule time to share some ideas with you. BIG GIG FOR RHEMUS

first_imgThey’re calling it their first ever stadium gig! For local Coffs Harbour pub band `Rhemus’ their performance at the 2004 National 18 Years Championships was their first inside a main arena. Used to pub gigs and community benefits Rhemus played at the Coffs Harbour International Sports Stadium last night, in front of around 1000 players, spectators and officials. After feedback from previous 18 Years functions, which included venues that were too small, not enough live action or freedom to move around or catch up with friends; Tournament Director John Pratt decided that something needed to change this year. And so it did. Instead of heading out for the function, caterers came to the Coffs Harbour stadium, cooking a delicious barbeque spread, adding salads and bread rolls for all players and officials to enjoy. “The ATA decided we needed to change the format of the function following the survey feedback gained from all participating permits,” Mr Pratt said. “We decided to hold the smorgasbord dinner, with a live band and in a secure location.” “It was a very successful night, particularly with the live band and an excellent meal,” he said. The band provided an atmosphere for the players never seen before, with players singing with the band and dancing to win touch footballs signed by Benji Marshall and Joe Williams. Rachael Behan from Central Queensland kicked the night off, jumping out of her seat to race down the front and sing a song for the crowd. The 15 year-old at her first National 18 Years tournament wowed us all with her guts as well as her singing. The players enjoyed the night, Kelly Jones from the Brisbane Cobras echoing the general consensus: “It was good food, good service and the band were pretty good too,” Kelly said. “It was also more relaxed because you could move around and talk to everyone.” With such a successful night, it will no doubt be on the cards again for the 2005 National 18 Years Championships. “It was definitely a great success, the one area we will continue to work on is the structure of food delivery to ensure a shorting waiting time for teams, but overall it was a great night,” Mr Pratt said.
