Jury to decide fate of accused in Atlantic Gardens murder

first_imgDefence Attorney Mark Waldron and Prosecutors Tiffini Lyken, Narissa Leander and Seeta Bishundial have presented closing arguments in the Richard Stanton murder trial and it is now up to the 12-member jury to determine whether the defendant is innocent or guilty.Stanton is accused of executing Patricia Sanasie three years ago in front of her Atlantic Gardens, East Coast Demerara (ECD) home.Presiding Judge Brassington Reynolds will this morning sum up the case before handing it over to the jury for deliberation. On Wednesday last, the prosecution closed its case and on Friday, Justice Reynolds overruled the defence’s no-caseAccused: Richard Stantonsubmission.During a one hour presentation to the jury on Monday, Stanton led his own defence via an unsworn statement from the prisoner’s dock.He professed that he was not a killer and that he was not born to kill anyone. He said that he was working at his sister’s establishment, the Dynasty Night Club, at the time Police first picked him up in January 2015 and when they re-arrested and charged him in April 2015.Stanton told the Court that he grew up watching his mother being abused by males and because of this, he did not have it in him to hurt anyone. He was picked out of an identification (ID) parade (as Number 3) by the late woman’s daughter, Ramona Sanasie who was driving the car the night her mother was killed. Stanton disputed Police saying that some of the persons in the line-up were not similar in features to him.Sanasie was killed as she exited her vehicle and was about to open her gate at her home. A year prior to the woman’s death, a similar attempt was made on her husband’s life, and she and her brother were implicated. One of the investigators, Detective Constable Samuel Headley testified last weekDeceased: Patricia SanasieTuesday that several of the exhibits which he had lodged at the Sparendaam Police Station after he had given evidence during the Preliminary Inquiry at the Magistrate’s Court had gone missing. The jury was told that the ballistics report and two warheads which were removed from Sanasie’s body during a post-mortem examination cannot be located.Ramona Sanasie told investigators that a “big built” man exited a silver Toyota Raum, and she saw him twice as he passed and looked at her. Her mother was reportedly shot to her chest, abdomen and neck, among other areas, and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital.last_img read more

W Cape on track as ‘Africa’s Silicon Valley’

first_img6 May 2013South Africa’s Western Cape province is establishing a reputation as Africa’s version of Silicon Valley for its easy access to technology and lower business start-up costs, according to the 2012 Sanlam/Business Partners Entrepreneur of the Year winner, Stuart Forrest.Forrest is the owner of Triggerfish Animation, which produced Adventures in Zambezia, and won last year’s Entrepreneur of the Year title in the category Innovator of the Year. The Sanlam/Business Partners competition recognises entrepreneurial spirit and excellence, and was established in 2010.“Due to the city’s entrepreneurial activity, Cape Town has seen an influx of IT [information technology] and tech start-ups,” spokesperson the Entrepreneur of the Year competition, Kobus Engelbrecht, said in a statement last week.“By attracting the best entrepreneurs, technical brains and foreign direct investment, Cape Town is quickly becoming a local ‘Silicon Valley’.”Vinny Lingham and Justin Stanford’s launch of the Silicon Cape venture in 2009 also contributed to the region’s reputation as a technology hub, Engelbrecht said.Silicon Cape is a high-tech innovation hub to attract top technical entrepreneurs.“Initiatives such as this will generate seeds for a successful entrepreneurial ecosystem in Cape Town and positively contribute towards economic growth and development within South Africa,” he said.Creating a South African version of the Californian Silicon Valley will also encourage young talent to stay in the country, Engelbrecht said, citing PayPal co-founder Elon Musk as an example of a South African who left the country and established his business in Silicon Valley.Deeper investment is also necessary for the growth of the industry.“The success and growth of Silicon Valley in the United States has proven that investors need to sometimes take a calculated risk and step out of their comfort zone in order to create a globally-influential technology hub,” Forrest said.SAinfo reporterlast_img read more

Trudeau respects Kangs decision to resign wont say if he asked him

first_imgSASKATOON – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he respects the decision of Calgary MP Darshan Kang to step away from the Liberal caucus while sexual harassment allegations against him are investigated. But Trudeau won’t say whether he personally asked Kang to resign.Kang said he’s leaving the governing party’s caucus to focus his efforts on clearing his name.He resigned from caucus Thursday night, shortly after The Hill Times reported that a woman who worked in Kang’s constituency office when he was a member of the Alberta legislature has come forward alleging she was sexually harassed. The woman alleged in an interview that Kang grabbed her breasts, among other inappropriate behaviour, and would not desist in the harassment despite repeatedly being asked to stop.Kang, who was elected federally in 2015, is already under investigation after a young woman who worked in his federal constituency office complained in June of sexual harassment. That woman’s father told the Toronto Star earlier this week that Kang allegedly offered the staffer as much as $100,000 if she didn’t tell her parents about the harassment. The Star cited the woman’s father, who was not named, alleging that Kang repeatedly harassed his daughter over a period of four or five years.Among the father’s accusations: Kang gave his daughter unwanted hugs, stroked or held her hand, once took her to an apartment where he tried to remove her jacket and followed her the next day to her hotel and tried to get into her room to talk. When asked about Kang Friday, Trudeau said the House of Commons has a processes for investigating harassment complaints that respects both the complainant’s and the respondent’s rights.Under that process, adopted in December 2014, when there is no mediated resolution to a harassment complaint, an external investigator is hired to review the facts.Either the complainant or the respondent can appeal if they’re unsatisfied with the investigator’s final report.“The whip’s office in my party has been engaged in this process and we are allowing this process to unfold as it must. I won’t have anymore comments to make on this specifically other than to say that I respect Mr. Kang’s decision to step away from the Liberal caucus while this process is being undergone,” Trudeau said.“As a feminist, I am pleased that there is a process in place and I am allowing that process to unfold as it must.”Sheila Malcolmson, federal NDP critic for the Status of Women, accused Trudeau of hiding behind process.“He should have taken action when he first learned of these troubling allegations instead of dodging questions for three weeks,” she said in a statement Friday.Alberta Liberal Leader David Khan said the allegations are “deeply concerning.”“The behaviour alleged is repugnant and has no place in society,” Khan said in a statement Friday afternoon. He said the party will do an internal investigation and relevant information will be passed on to all those bodies that are investigating.“Until there is any additional information or findings by an investigative body, we will not be making any further comment on this matter.”A spokesman for the Speaker of the Alberta legislature said that office only became aware of the Alberta allegations through the Hill Times report and could not comment further because it’s a human resources matter.last_img read more
