Moroccos Taliouine hosts the 7th International Festival of saffron

first_imgTaroudant- Under the theme “the Role of Inter-profession in the Development of the Saffron Sector,” the 7th International Festival of saffron kicked off Thursday in Taliouine in the province of Taroudant to celebrate the harvest of the spice of saffron, “most expensive in the world known for its therapeutic qualities.” The official delegation, consisting mainly of the Minister of Agriculture and Marine Fisheries Mr. Aziz Akhannouch, the governor of the province of Taroudant Mr. M’Hamedi Fouad, president of the Regional Council of Souss-Massa-Draa Mr. Brahim Hafidi and and parliamentarians, conducted the delivery of a large batch of agricultural equipments.In a statement to the press, Mr. Akhannouch said that the productivity of the region increased after the royal visit to the region (January 2011) from 2.5 kg to about 5.5 kg per hectare, indicating that the cultivated area has increased from 500 to 2,200 hectares fully equipped by drip irrigation system. According to the organizers, the professionalization of this event is to meet the following objectives:To develop and promote the sector of saffron into a vector of socio-economic development for the local population;To bring together the results of scientific research in the sector and share them among farmers;To contribute to the development of tourism in the region of Talouine.The festival was also an opportunity for local cooperatives to exhibit their products and artifacts.Even though saffron and saffron-based products were the dominant exhibitions, other products of the region were remarkably present mainly Argan oil, saffron flavored honey, almonds, garlic and the famous carpets of Taznakht.“The harvest season has been a tradition since our ancestors, who used to celebrate with their modest means the festivities by crowning a year of hard work by a good harvest, a festive annual event. The new generations are then asked to learn the notes from those who initiated the idea of ??organizing the saffron festival, which celebrates this year its 7th edition,” reads the official website of the festival.A lot of people, men and women alike, with their wonderful local costumes gathered in the evening to enjoy the vibrant rhythms of local music and dance, known as “Ahwash”, along with other famous artists and music bands from all over the kingdom.In addition to the atmosphere of festivity that marked the capital of saffron on this occasion, many cultural conferences, skill building workshops, sport activities and entertaining activities for children  were held in Dar Zaaafran (the house of saffron) during the four days of the festival.last_img
