first_imgFourth Ranked Argonauts Advance Over Sixth-Ranked Vulcans ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – After having their match suspended because of rain on Thrusday, fourth-ranked West Florida returned to the courts on Friday at the NCAA Division II National Championships at the Sanlando Park. West Florida (22-6) finished their match with a 5-1 win over sixth-ranked California Univ. of Pennsylvania (28-2). West Florida moves on to the semifinals later this afternoon against Lynn. The match was suspended after the Argonauts sweep the doubles competition. In singles action, Suzana Cavalcante (Sao Paulo, Brazil) was up one set in the first position. Tammy Kevey (Auckland, New Zealand) won the first set and was up 3-0 in the second set in the second position. Anne Beard (Villevaude, France) was also up one set in the sixth position. When the matches were resumed at 8:00 a.m. EST on Friday, Kevey quickly stepped up and only lost one game to improve to 21-5 in singles. Fifth-ranked Cavalcante also took advantage of the lead and defeated her opponent with a 6-3, 6-3 victory, improving her singles record to 17-4. Simultaneously, The Vulcans avoided a shutout as Nina Reiswich won in the fifth position over Paola Arevalo (Cali, Colombia). West Florida will return to action in the NCAA Division II National Championship semifinal this afternoon. West Florida will meet third-ranked Lynn at 2:30 p.m. EST. Lynn defeated West Florida, 5-4, earlier this season, and the Fighting Knights hold an 11-1 advantage in the all-time series against the Argonauts.
